Even the Dalai Lama Sucks at Meditation

Dr. Mark Shillinger

Dear Patients & Friends,

In 1970, my first yoga teacher, Swami Rama, told his students about an event that was going to be held in 2000, the Maha Kumbh Mela. This event is considered one of the oldest known gatherings in the history of the world, and whenever it happens it's always the largest gathering of humans in the history of the world!

The purpose of this spiritual extravaganza is to bring together yoga gurus and saints to share their wisdom with their followers, as well as the seekers who come from around the world.

Sure enough, in 2000, I took a month off from the chiropractic office and went to India to immerse myself into this month-long congregation. My intention was to bring the blessings and wisdom of these yoga saints back to the West.

Dalai Lama's Advice About Meditation

The Dalai Lama attended this epic event and gave a private talk to a handful of organizations, including the one that Swami Rama started, The Himalayan Institute. I had the opportunity to be just a few feet away from the Dalai Lama while people asked him questions.

Somebody told him that they sucked at meditation because they couldn't turn off their minds completely. What the Dalai Lama said completely surprised everybody who was standing around him.

He first said that even he couldn't turn off his thinking mind every time he wanted to. He reminded us that the ideal goal of meditation is to experience the Oneness of Reality at such a deep level that there is no sensation of "me" or "you" or any "thing."

He reminded us that the initial purpose of meditation is to calm the mind by directing it to focus on the present moment. By mastering the ability to be "present" or "mindful," the Dalai Lama emphasized that we would then gain access to our deeper, underlying, ever-present awareness of reality that produces a blissful sense of peace.

Wouldn't It Be Great If You Knew How To Experience Bliss!?

I've been studying, practicing, and teaching meditation for 47 years. During this time, I've developed the skill to convert meditation concepts into simple, understandable principles, and then transform those ideas into practical techniques for busy people just like you.

Because I'm adept at "breaking things down" into their more fundamental parts to see the underlying unity, I've used that bigger perspective to figure out how to teach meditation in ways that anyone can learn, especially beginners.

Meditation & Yoga Intensive

On Tuesday, February 27th, I'll be teaching my annual Meditation and Yoga Intensive here at the office. After I remove all the furniture in the reception area, there's room for 8 people to learn the best enlightenment secrets I know.

This intensive always sells out, so if you want to attend, please register right away.

PS – When I returned home from India, people immediately asked me to describe my experience to them. I called it Kumba Vegas, because it was so outrageous and non-stop, with events happening literally 24/7. There were approximately 35 – 50 million people, with 90% of them wearing orange robes and carrying all of their possessions in a small satchel. As much as I learned and loved my time there, I couldn't wait to eat a pastrami sandwich and read a sports section when I came home.

Happy Anniversary!

Last week was the 33-year anniversary of Schillinger Chiropractic. I am humbled by all of the life lessons I've learned while serving thousands of patients during this time. Thank you all for your support on so many levels. I am happy to be surrounded by such a great community.

And, of course, a big shout out to Katy! Without her wisdom and work, I would be nowhere near the level of success and happiness that I enjoy.

Dr. Matt

Dr. Matt will be covering for me on Monday, February 12th, and Monday, February 26th, so that I can continue working on other projects, like the upcoming Happiness Master Mind Group, which will get underway at the end of March.
