How Chiropractic is Reducing the Opioid Crisis

Dear Patients & Friends,

According to a recent article published in Medscape Medical News, chiropractic care is contributing toward an almost 50 percent reduction in opioid prescriptions issued in the United States

Amazingly enough, the research was led by a chiropractor, who said, "Preventing opioid addiction and overdose continues to be a significant public health priority; and as part of a strategy to lessen opioid use, clinical guidelines now recommend many non-pharmacological options to be considered as front-line treatment ahead of any medication," lead author Kelsey L. Corcoran,

Dr. Mark Shillinger

DC, VA Connecticut Health Care System and Yale Center for Medical Informatics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, told Medscape Medical News.

The findings of the Yale School of Medicine study were presented at the American Academy of Pain Medicine 2019 Annual Meeting. Researchers selected a series of studies with a total of more than 60,000 patients to include in their analysis.

Opioid Addiction Can Happen to Anyone

The epidemic crisis of over-prescribing opioids to patients has destroyed individuals and families throughout the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total "economic burden" of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement.

Thankfully, new clinical guidelines in the U.S. now recommend many non-pharmacological options, including chiropractic care, to be used in place of dangerous opioid medication.

Obviously, chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, acupuncture, diet, stress management and exercise are excellent treatments for muscle, joint and bone pain.

PLEASE do your best to let your friends and family know that they don't have to succumb to unnecessary drugs when they have pain. There is a wide world of helpful alternatives to the mainstream medical method of dispensing drugs and performing surgery.

True,
Dr. Mark
