Wandering Minds Can Relax

Dear Patients & Friends,

A patient told me this past week that he would like to come to the meditation and yoga class but that he's never been good at meditation because his mind wanders so quickly. I appreciated his honesty because I know there are so many people who have tried meditation and find that they can't keep their mind focused.

Dr. Mark Shillinger

I told him that, like him, my mind also tends to wander. I don't call it attention deficit disorder, because it doesn't mean that my brain has a disorder or disease. It simply means that neurologically, my attention span is short. Some people have longer attention spans and some people have short attention spans. Without going into the brain science of both types of brains, I'll just say that both styles of attention are equally important for survival.

That said, when I told him that the meditation techniques can be done in 10 seconds and be very effective in calming the mind, suddenly he was interested! His reaction to learning that you can calm the mind in such a brief period of time is very similar to the ones I get from other patients upon learning this information.

When people come to my yoga & meditation intensive and learn these meditation or stress reduction techniques that are easy to do anywhere at any time, they always thank me for having an effective, practical tool to reduce their stress "instantly".

The techniques I teach helps both types of brains, but are designed for people with busy schedules and short attention spans.

Here's what two patients had to say about the intensive after attending a class this year:

"The yoga intensive is personal and intimate because it's a small group of people in the class. I enjoyed the sage ceremony and the stress management techniques. The slide presentation was great because it helped me learn about my body and mind from a yoga perspective. The time flew by! I recommend everyone take this class."

Kari Leutner

"The information I learned can be immediately applied into my life. The intensive moved at a pace that kept my attention. In summary, I would say this intensive was, "a pearl in the oyster."
