What to Do About World-Wide Stress

Dear Patients and Friends,

Yesterday I had a chance to do something that I rarely get to do, which is to slow down. Father's Day is one of the days where I throttle down the tempo and appreciate my life as I prepare for my family to visit my home.

As most of you know, I don't read newspapers or watch TV to receive "the news." I have no doubt that subjecting my brain to the onslaught of negative information that exists in the world is only going to make me sad and tense. However, on Father's Day, one of my traditions is to read the Sunday New York Times while sipping a cup of coffee in a quiet living room.

Stress is Making All of Us Unhealthier

While reading all of the negative front-page headlines, especially about the escalating friction between nations and between individuals, I realized that we, collectively, as a human species, are suffering from an underlying anxiety that is causing many of us to have less energy and more unhealthy symptoms.

Dr. Mark Shillinger

This is not a small matter for humankind. It's easy to make ourselves believe that this kind of stress is not happening to us individually. Even somebody such as myself, who prides myself on avoiding exposure to excessive media-stress, can't escape this pervasive anxiety emanating from the thoughts and behaviors of people around me. All of us are subjected to this subtle and powerful harsh form of stress "radiation."

Learn to Relax Your Brain Quickly

As a specialist in stress management, the best advice that I can give to all of you is to learn how to relax yourself quickly and effectively throughout your waking hours. By consciously controlling the release of healthy hormones (endorphins, dopamine, etc.), and limiting the secretion of unhealthy hormones due to stress (cortisol, adrenaline, etc.), you'll avoid unnecessary suffering from the biological symptoms of anxiety.

According to medical research, stress is the #1 cause of all illness! It's likely that up to 80% of all symptoms are related to our inability or unwillingness to control our brain chemistry. Successfully regulating brain chemistry is something primates have been doing for hundreds of thousands of years.

Unfortunately, our modern, progressive society has forgotten how to efficiently relax ourselves.

If you want to begin the process of mastering your ability to relax in the presence of stress, join me tomorrow evening at the monthly yoga and meditation intensive. Almost every patient who's attended this 2-hour workshop, has thanked me for showing them simple mindfulness-based stress reduction meditation techniques.

Here's what two patients had to say about the Intensive:

"I came in feeling like I was tied up in a knot. At the end of the intensive, I was completely relaxed. Thank you! Can you offer this intensive more often?"

Ann Elias

"I appreciated the discussion of the relationship between quantum physics and enlightenment. I liked that we learned techniques that only take a minute to do. I also enjoyed the involvement of the class members with Mark. I can't believe how the time went by - it was fantastic."
